Long before Atascadero became a city, the region was home to the Salinan people, whose descendants call themselves the “People of the Oaks.” The modern community began in 1913, when publisher and civic visionary E.G. Lewis founded the Atascadero Colony as a carefully planned settlement combining country living with urban conveniences.
